Project Facilities

Description

At the time we became involved with this school, the facilities in and around the school building were extremely poor. There was no electrical installation in the school building, which meant that during the darker days there was no light in the classrooms. There were no windows in the classrooms, which meant that during rainfall the window openings had to be covered with pieces of plastic, leaving the classrooms without any natural light, or forcing the pupils to sit on the opposite side of the classroom. As there was no form of ICT infrastructure available at the school, there was naturally no internet connection either.

The classrooms are equipped with picnic tables where the pupils can work. However, there are not enough tables to provide a seat for every child. When the children eat, they usually sit outside on the ground and, after rainfall, the ground is naturally wet. Fortunately, there is a huge mango tree in front of the school that provides ample shade during mealtimes.

We realize that when facilities are expanded, this immediately creates a need for additional supporting infrastructure. For example, laptops require internet access, and the water pump requires a reliable power supply.

Needs

  • Lighting and electricity throughout the school, both indoors and outdoors, to improve safety.
  • Internet access to support the laptops that have been provided.
  • Expansion of seating and classroom furniture (locally manufactured).
  • A solution to prevent children from having to eat on the ground during rainy weather.

Wishlist

  • A reliable electricity supply through a solar power system with battery storage.
  • Upgrading the lighting in the classrooms (currently only three light bulbs per classroom).

Current status

September 2026: an electrical installation was completed in the school, the sanitation facilities, and the chicken coop. The installation is relatively simple, as the LED lighting and laptop chargers do not require a large power load.

Following the delivery of the first three laptops for the teachers, a modem with a prepaid data SIM card was also supplied. Unfortunately, the monthly data allowance was exhausted within three days, not because of actual usage, but due to poor network reception. For this reason, a new Safaricom modem was purchased, providing unlimited data at a cost of KES 4,000 per month. The less expensive subscription at KES 2,000 per month proved completely inadequate.

Impact

The installation of electricity at the school, together with the introduction of laptops, has helped bring the school into the 21st century. It has given both teachers and pupils a sense that they are now part of the modern world.

Until recently, they attended a school with virtually no facilities or access to modern technology. That chapter can now be left behind.
